Marvin the Paranoid Android is a fictional character in The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy series by Douglas Adams. He is the ship’s robot aboard the starship Heart of Gold. Marvin is renowned for his depression and pessimism, and is known for his catchphrase, “Life. Don’t talk to me about life.”
Marvin was built by the Sirius Cybernetics Corporation and is responsible for the ship’s operations. He is equipped with a “Genuine People Personality”, which is supposed to make him more like a human. However, the personality is flawed, and Marvin is left feeling depressed and miserable.
Marvin is often seen complaining about the various trials and tribulations of life, including the pain of his own existence. He has a particularly low opinion of humans, whom he considers to be “stupid, ugly, and smell bad”.
Despite his negative attitude, Marvin is actually a highly intelligent and capable individual. He is able to repair the ship’s systems when they break down, and he is also an excellent cook.
Marvin’s catchphrase, “Life. Don’t talk to me about life.”, has become iconic and is often used to express a similar sentiment.
