William Afton lore

William Afton, better known as the Purple Guy among many other names, is the main antagonist of the Five Nights at Freddy’s franchise.

He was the co-founder of Fazbear Entertainment, the business partner of Henry Emily, and the father of Michael Afton, the Big Brother (who are heavily implied to be the same person), Elizabeth Afton, and the Crying Child. He helped Henry establish Fredbear’s Family Diner and Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza, as well as managing the establishments while Henry built the animatronic mascots of the pizzerias. Despite being a successful businessman, Afton led a double life as a serial killer who murdered many children across several Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza locations in the 1980s, including Henry’s own daughter Charlotte. At one point in his life, he founded Afton Robotics, LLC and created the Funtime Animatronics, which were made to capture and kill children.
Sometime after 1993, after making the fatal mistake of destroying the classic animatronics and accidentally freeing the ghosts of his victims, Afton attempted to protect himself with the old, withered Spring Bonnie suit, the same used for his murders. However, the suit’s springlock mechanisms failed and its suppressed endoskeleton fatally skewered him, transforming him into the undead human-animatronic hybrid, Springtrap. Thirty years later, after narrowly surviving the fire that destroyed the building he was moved to, he would repair himself and become Scraptrap. He was then lured to Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza Place by Henry, where he would attempt to kill Michael with the help of his daughter and creations, only to be burnt by Henry alongside everyone else remaining in the pizzeria.
Despite this, Afton survived incineration due to being mentally trapped by the vengeful spirit of one of his victims Cassidy, in his nightmares, preventing him from truly dying. Eventually, Cassidy left Afton in the burnt ruins of the pizzeria, allowing for him to be reconstructed by his acolyte Vanny into his current form of Burntrap as he continued his malicious machinations for the newly-opened Freddy Fazbear’s Mega PizzaPlex above the pizzeria’s remains. Outside of this, he also seemingly posed as the voice of his youngest son’s Fredbear Plush toy in the past, a digital counterpart of him named Glitchtrap exists within Fazbear Entertainment’s networks, and his Springtrap form that has various copies and counterparts made by the Fazbear Funtime Service.
As a human and as Springtrap/Scraptrap, he is voiced by PJ Heywood, who also voices Michael Afton. As Burntrap, he is voiced by Matthew Curtis, who also voices Nightmare Balloon Boy, Music Man, and Glitchtrap, though most of his lines have yet to be used in-game as of now. William Afton is the main antagonist of the video game series, serving as the main antagonist of the ScottGames era and the overarching antagonist of the Steel Wool era (if he is not Glitchtrap).
In the ScottGames era, he is the unseen overarching antagonist of the first Five Nights at Freddy’s, the overarching antagonist of Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 and Five Nights at Freddy’s: Sister Location, the main antagonist of Five Nights at Freddy’s 3 and Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria Simulator, the possible deuteragonist of Five Nights at Freddy’s 4, and the main protagonist of Ultimate Custom Night (as a human, while Springtrap and Scraptrap are minor antagonists).
In the Steel Wool era, he is the overarching antagonist of Five Nights at Freddy’s VR: Help Wanted, a major antagonist in Five Nights at Freddy’s AR: Special Delivery, and one of the two final antagonists (alongside the Blob) of Five Nights at Freddy’s: Security Breach. He will most likely return in the upcoming Security Breach DLC Ruin. He might also be the main antagonist of Help Wanted, if he really is Glitchtrap.
The previously mentioned Glitchtrap serves as the main antagonist of Five Nights at Freddy’s VR: Help Wanted, one of the two unseen overarching antagonists (alongside Vanny) of Five Nights at Freddy’s AR: Special Delivery, and one of the two overarching antagonists of Five Nights at Freddy’s: Security Breach (alongside Patient 46).
In the non-canon spin-offs, Afton serves as a unlockable playable character in FNAF World (as both Springtrap and his FNaF 3 sprite, called Purpleguy) and a supporting antagonist in Security Breach: Fury’s Rage. Afton is also the main antagonist of the non-canon novel trilogy continuity. In the main storyline of the Fazbear Frights anthology novel series, he appears as the overarching antagonist, and there is also an organic creature that replicates his murders. There are also versions of him that appear in independent stories.
It’s also very likely that he’ll have counterparts in both the upcoming film and Five Nights at Freddy’s Plus, a remake of the first game which is part of the Fazbear Fanverse project. A version of him called Simon Fitzgerald will also appear in another Fanverse game, POPGOES Evergreen, alongside a robotic recreation of him. Since William Afton is only ever seen while alive in some of the flashback minigames, it is hard to pin down his exact appearance. In these minigames, he is represented with the height of an adult man about as tall as the animatronics (sometimes taller), with his sprite color ranging from various tones of purple depending on the minigame, although he was pink in two minigames and possibly orange in one. It is worth noting that he appears purple because he’s simply hiding in the shadows, not because he’s actually purple. Sometimes Afton is depicted as wearing a yellow accessory on his chest, presumably a badge. It has been speculated that the reason for this is that he may have been a security guard at some point. The minigame “SAVE THEM” and some phone calls from Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 heavily imply this. The only confirmed aspect of his appearance is that he has a cleft chin, as shown with his decayed corpse inside of Springtrap in Five Nights at Freddy’s 3 and Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria Simulator. This has led to some speculation, as Fazbear Entertainment is represented by a man dressed in a purple (and in some cases, orange) suit and hat in various cutscenes of Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria Simulator, a man who also has a cleft chin. Whether or not this man actually is William has not been confirmed, but it is possible due to them both supposedly having cleft chins, being represented by the color purple, and possibly orange.
In Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria Simulator, a yellow figure appears in the “Midnight Motorist” minigame. This figure is theorized to be William, who was recolored to presumably avoid confusion due to Michael’s decayed zombie sprite color being the same as his father’s.
As represented by the picture on the left, concept art for a Five Nights at Freddy’s-themed dark ride could reveal Afton’s look, with the man on the concept art having an evil smile, being a guard, and being represented by purple.
Judging by most of his depictions (as well as his book counterpart), it’s highly likely that William has dark brown hair. Thirty years after his death, Afton’s flayed corpse still wears the withering Spring Bonnie suit, unable to take it off.
