April 13, 2020 — One bar owner in Georgia found a clever way to help pay her staff, as bars and restaurants struggle financially during the coronavirus pandemic.
Jennifer Knox, who owns The Sand Bar in Tybee Island, took down nearly $4,000 worth of dollar bills that had been stapled to her bar’s walls — a tradition that patrons started 15 years ago.
Knox shared a photo of the money being stripped away on Facebook, saying all of it would go to bartenders and musicians in need.
CNN reports that The Sand Bar closed its doors in March after officials issued stay-at-home orders to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
“We were sitting there, doors locked, and I’m like, ‘Oh my gosh, there’s money on the walls and we have time on our hands,’ ” Knox told CNN. ” ‘We gotta get this money down.’ “
“I can’t just sit here and do nothing,” Knox said. “I’ll do what I can for my people.”
