In the 1970s and 1980s, the image of the U.S.S.R. in the West was of a giant nuclear-armed Communist country, a revolutionary, expansionist state seriously threatening the “Free World.” But many like me who studied it and traveled there could readily see that it was economically stagnating, socially conservative and politically quite fragile.
