Was there ever a battle, during the American Revolutionary or Civil War, where one side set up a bunch of loaded rifles and then fired them quickly, to make the enemy think they were being attacked by a larger force?

I remember my history teacher in about 7th grade mentioning this happening in some old American war, but I can’t find anything about it after searching.

I seem to recall that he said they set it all up overnight to attack some sort of fort or other structure, and distinctly remember him talking about people cutting down small trees to construct scaffolding to set multiple rifles up on, and they went down the lines firing, to make their number seem bigger.

It’s an interesting story and I can’t find anything about it, if it happened I’d love to know more about it. I’ve searched probably 20 different ways to find something. Thanks for any help!!
