If Jesus was a swarthy guy from the desert, why do you think our culture persists in depicting him as a fair skinned and light eyed individual?

Every culture presents him as looking like them for the most part. In Korea, Jesus looks Korean a lot of the time.
People always create their deities in their own image.
You ever look @ Asian church art? He looks Asian when they draw him. I’ve seen him with a pencil thin mustache.
It’s what people do.
I believe we don’t need to think too hard for the answer.
Man tends to create god in their own image.
In China he is often portrayed as Asian. In Africa as black. He is portrayed white because these depictions are in majority white countries.
As a Christian, Jesus race is completely irrelevant and meaningless though.
To proselityze
Because as a religious figure he is usually depicted by the culture he’s being worshipped in. Asian, African, Europe, etc.
I know people are going to jump to “whiteys racism”, but it’s not really. It’s more complicated than that.
As for how he actually looked, all we have is speculation and there’s varying estimates on all his features, unless he decides to pop back into existence sometime soon.
Toss-up between racism and “I imagine him looking like the people around me.”
Erasure and racism
Because people paint them based on proximity. Nothing racist bros
because ‘merica
The original one that the Catholic church based all their artwork off was an almost self portrait of the artist that painted it…think it was a German bloke
Because believers are fucking stupid?
To throw u off track an become Satan worshipr
Because one of the most famous depiction of Jesus is “Salvator Mundi” by, most likely, da Vinci, and the model is one of the Borgia.
Isn’t the present image of Jesus a friend of the painter who first painted a representation of him that people now believe to be him?
Only morons draw jesus regardless of how they portray him
The reason why Jesus is depicted white is because of what they had available at the time. In in certain Asian countries, he’s depicted as asian.
What people are saying about depicting Jesus as if he’s from the same region is true, but I think it’s worth discussing why he continues to be depicted that way in heterogeneous regions like the United States. Especially because I suspect that a Black or Asian church depicting him as Black or Asian wouldn’t go without criticism from certain U.S. media.
Based on my Art History classes, each artist tried making Jesus (or Mary, or Saint Whoever) as relatable as possible, so people could identify with the situation. The prof used a picture of the Angel Gabriel & Mary as an example. It was an old Dutch painting, and Mary was depicted as a young Dutch girl would’ve at that time. She explained that nowadays, Mary would probably be shown in jeans & a t-shirt, listening to an iPod (ca 2003).
Was Jesus not Jewish? He studied in Temple for many years. I see many fair skinned Jews here and in Isreal. Dark Hair, lighter hair, light skinned, tanned, dark skinned. My Niece married into a family living in Tel Aviv the whole family has lighter skin. I.E, who cares what skin he has? He is the great I am. When you are the Great I AM you can be whatever you wish to be. Hallowed Be Thy Name!
The same reasons that they knocked the noses off the pyramids.
Probably could’ve looked anyway he wanted. He was God
Because there is a solid venn diagram between conservative Christianity and racism.
If we didn’t white-wash things where would all those people find jobs? There is a very prominent industry surrounding the cultural appropriation.
Just think about that next time.
