Nuclear weapons.
I’ve seen estimates from experts that say we could lose 90% of the human population in a nuclear war and resulting nuclear winter. Day one would yield the total casualties of all of World War 2 – somewhere about 70,000,000.
The scariest part is the high potential for nuclear war to break out unexpectedly. There are potential situations in which a country’s leadership might have mere minutes to decide if what’s coming at them is an existential nuclear threat or not, and have to respond accordingly.
People might argue that the strong deterrent capacity nukes provide actually helps prevent conventional warfare from taking place, but it’s basically gambling with billions of lives in a worst-case scenario.
