If you were sent back to medieval times with your current knowledge and as a peasant with nothing, how would you build your success, fortune, fame, standing?

What do you think?

  1. Geez, that’s tough.

So… English would be different. Exactly *when* in the medieval period would be a factor there (and that’s assuming I land in an English-speaking land), but there’d be a definite language barrier. I might be able to pass for a deposed foreign noble – I’m tall now (6’2″), and would be unusually tall *then.* I can read and write, though I’d struggle with their script, and my hands are very definitely not a laborer’s hands. However, I can also do math, which might pin me more as a merchant (if memory serves the nobles tended to learn more theory than actual algebra; algebra was for lesser classes – merchants learned it, because business).

In any case, I’d try to procure a financier for my bold new invention: canning.

While there existed other methods for preserving food, canning helps retain the most nutritional value (especially vitamin C) and preserves food the longest. Any nation that possessed this technology would have a massive logistical advantage, especially in their navy.

  2. Honestly the amount of modern bacteria that I’d bring back with me that I would be immune to but they wouldn’t , would probably start a new plauge.

  3. I wouldn’t. Let any other illiterate foreign commoner that doesn’t know the language, I would be greeted with extreme suspicion at best and would be extremely lucky to eke out a living as a day laborer.

  4. The whole world would be so different. I’d have to earn the language again and find somewhere to live. I guess I would look at what people are doing and think about simple fixes that we have now that they haven’t designed yet. Simple tools or gadgets that I could replicate. Not sure what as it depends when and where I am exactly.

Maybe something as simple as a mechanical digger like you see in some parks. Or a way of purifying water beyond what they already use.

  5. Would I have time to prepare before hand? If not I would probably write literature of some sort because it would be fun and I think I’d be able to borrow from modern writers so that I seem like a creative genius.

Otherwise, I’d probably play it safe and learn all the modern techniques for an essential trade like metal working or something so that I’m guaranteed to be an essential worker for like a king.

  6. Forge papers that say I’m a nobleman from a far off place “visiting”.

Just act like I belong from there. I should be able to get a few bucks selling such exotic fabrics like denim and polyester to them.
