What do you think?

  1. An hour each direction. I don’t handle it, I use it. It’s ‘me’ time. If I have a crappy day at work, it’s my decompressor so I don’t drag that home with me. Sometimes I’ll blast metal music and rock out. Sometimes I ride in silence. I’m free to do just as I please with that time.

  2. I was commuting a total of about 3 hours a day, 1.5 hours each way. My workday is 8 hours and I spend another 3 hours getting to and from work. I quit that job and found something only 40 minutes away.

  3. 50 mins each way, I decompress or get ready for work.

Usually some good thinking about projects I am perpetually in the middle of.

I play “what’s that fucking sound” cause my CRV has 330k and shits wearing out.

Or I listen to music on the radio since we have a good classic rock station that plays almost no ads

  4. A tad over an hour each way. I like where I live now….. super cheap super safe. I do want to move closer to a smaller city eventually but for now I’m fine with being here. I’ve been commuting at least an hour the last 2 or so years so I’m used to it

  6. I used to commute 1hr40 each way-car, train, tube- with 10-12 hr days. Money made up for it plus I got a chance to read, play games, catch up on life admin etc for the train part.

  7. Mine is 40-50 minutes one way, which is just about average in the Netherlands so you can debate wether its long. Anyway, I actually like it. Driving allows me to clear my head after work and in the morning to get ready for it. Because i live in a less densely populated area there isn’t a lot of traffic and I can just cruise to work. In the mornings i like to listen to news radio and switch to Spotify during commercial breaks. On the way back I just blast music.

  8. Not me, but a coworker has a 90-minute each way train ride to work every day. He downloads Netflix (and other streaming content) onto his tablet, and watches it with earbuds in during his commute. He is on top of every show and movie being talking about in pop culture. Every time I wonder, “When does he have the time to watch all this stuff?” I remember he has three hours a day of screen time just going to and from work.

The pandemic was brutal on his screen time. For 18 months, he wasn’t up to date on all his shows. It was crazy having a conversation with him only to have him say, “Sorry, we can’t talk about this. I haven’t seen that one yet.” I’ve known him more than a decade. That was some ‘Invasion of the Body Snatchers’ dialogue coming out of him.

  9. Listen to music or podcasts.

    Read news/articles online.

    Scroll social media.

Plan your week/budget/make a shopping list etc.

Thank god for smartphones, they make this so much easier than it used to be!

  10. 35-40 minutes one way though it sometimes feels longer. I either listen to music or check out a podcast from one of the radio stations outside my area depending on what I’m in the mood for. Sometimes though I do choose to enjoy the ride in silence.

  11. I used to commute an hour each way. I rode a metro north train in NY. These trains are very comfortable and have power outlets so for me it was me time
