I just found out narwhals aren’t mythical creatures like unicorns. I’m 48.
I didn’t think wolverines were real animals until recently. And all I know about them without googling is that they exist, and aren’t just a sports mascot.
I’m not sure if this is what the person is asking, but the last animal I discovered was a tapir. I had no idea what they were until I saw one at a zoo.
I recently learned about the Axolotl or “Mexican waking fish”. They’re pretty cool looking, but unfortunately they’re also critically endangered.
Tardigrades
The sun bear
They look too weird to be bears.
Capybara
Vietnamese leaf turtles
A Dik-dik, I honestly thought it was a photshopped pic the first time I saw one.
Javelinas.
A friend in Arizona was telling me about an encounter she had with one. I vaguely remember having heard of one before but when I googled it, I was like “I have never seen this being before”. Really needed some eye bleach after that one.
Thought this neighborhood climate was too dry for amphibians until a [western spadefoot toad](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spea_hammondii) showed up in my backyard.
Wolverines.
Tree kangaroo and siren birds.
‘Freshwater’ Moray Snowflake Eel (can live a few years in freshwater, does better in brackish, and best in marine water). I didn’t know they existed! Coolest water pet we have!! (We have a few fish aquariums (15). )
A strange but beautiful swimming water creature consisting of 4 different species.
I recently learned that beefalos are actually real animals and not just made up for the Don’t Starve video game.
About a year ago I discovered red pandas. I’m in my late 40s.
