The Great War. Film was still very limited then, and the first films shot on the front date from the summer/fall of 1916. A lot of the footage was staged too, because actual shots were just impossible to film. But I think it had the potential to paint a terrifying picture of war that could be imprinted into all our memories. It was, after all, the deadliest conflict in all human history. Not even WW2 could surpass its death toll. How many could have been spared if we had used that footage to discourage people from joining the war rather than encouraging them to fight for their country? We’ll never know.
