What foods in your country are called American whatever, like we say French Toast or Brazil Nuts?

  1. UK poster here. When I was younger we called the cake style muffins ‘American muffins’ to distinguish them from the disk-shaped ones that we toast and have with butter.

    Have also heard ‘American cheese’ for those orange processed cheese slices, ‘American frosting’ for the cans of cake frosting you can buy, ‘American style pizza’ was a sales term for a while (again, maybe twenty years ago) – now you’re more likely to see ‘Chicago style’.

    These days, stuff is just normal and readily available, and doesn’t tend to come with the ‘American’ title. American sections in the supermarkets tend to be stuff like Hershey’s Chocolate, Kraft Mac & Cheese, Goldfish Crackers, etc.
