Don’t breathe the first one, the second one sucked
The ring
The Exorcist. Its special effects have been surpassed years ago, but for vibe it’s still the king.
the shining
I really wish my parents hadn’t let me watch the really good ones like Alien when I was young so I could appreciate the sheer and unexpected terror of the chest burst like it was intended.
But It Follows gave me a great scare with the giant man. The “stomach hitting your shoes in dread and sudden panic” scares are the best, and that one hit it perfectly.
Evil Dead 2
Idk but the hills have eyes *fucked* me up
The old Texas Chainsaw Massacre
The Descent. Turned it on alone in a dark house around 2am without having any idea what it was. The brutality and relentless feeling of claustrophobia & there being “no way out” had me tucking my feet up under the blanket as a 25yo man.
Hereditary was pretty damn unnerving!
I really like Insidious
*Midsommar*, probably. Not much scares me these days, but that movie was super unsettling.
Event Horizon
My wedding video.
Unpopular opinion maybe, I really liked the rob zombie halloweens. Thought they were scary an entertaining as fuck. They were gonna come out with a 3rd but it never panned out for whatever reason
Return to Oz, marketed as a Disney kid’s movie, but it’s fucking scary.
Hereditary
A Quiet Place
The Lighthouse
Psycho
Lake Mungo
hobs and shaw
I wouldn’t say the best, but surprisingly good in terms of expectations is “I See You”. The best is probably Insidious
It’s not highbrow or anything, but I really like the 2017 version of It.
The Haunting (1964 version)
Evil Dead 1 & 2 (obvs)
…. And probably a relatively unknown modern masterpiece:
The Descent
White Noise or The Blair Witch Project. I think I watched them way too young and they struck a chord with me that I don’t think I can ever shake.
Goodnight Mommy was very well done and a mindfuck
28 Days Later
