  1. IRC channel wars were pretty neat. Shitty for some, but fun in their own way.

Basically the first person to join a channel on a server ‘owned’ the channel and had mod powers. If the channel became empty, it was up for grabs.

This led to bot armies and other random mischief for taking over channels.

People would write bots to hold their channel that were extremely minimal and secure, because if your bot disconnected your channel was at risk.

Eventually the IRC servers themselves started offering bot services like Nickserv and Chanserv. Good times.

  2. The web didn’t really have graphics at first, it was mostly text and probably the least interesting part of the internet for a while. IRC and UseNet were the big players for a long time until companies started buying up .com domains and making the web the main focus.

  3. Mosaic comes to mind. No search engine really. Word of mouth gave you a link and you just sort of followed the series of links into the unknown. A few years later you could wave to some guy’s cat by clicking a button or dispense a coke in some dorm. Plus, banner exchange and lots of flashing shit everywhere.

  4. The wild west days of Napster and Limewire. Remember how every shitty parody song was labelled weird al and half of everything was porn no matter what you were actually trying to get?
