TIL about the Sumela Monastery. Built nearly 4,000 feet up the side of a cliff, it was founded in the 300s. Destroyed and rebuilt several times, mostly during the Byzantine Era, it was emptied and abandoned in the 1920s. Taken over by the Turkish government it has been restored for tourism.

TIL about “Aunt Sammy,” Uncle Sam’s wife. Created in the 1920s by the US Dept of Agriculture as a radio show for farm wives, she would “gossip” about social activities & gardening, answer questions, and provide recipes. Local women voiced Aunt Sammy so their accents matched the broadcast areas.

TIL that during WWII, the US Navy had two aircraft carriers operating in Lake Michigan, known as the Corn Belt Fleet. They were converted from 1920s paddle steamers and served as floating runways to train pilots away from danger. In total, 17,820 pilots were trained, including George H. W. Bush.
