TIL French Chef Marc Veyrat sued The Michelin Guide over demoting his restaurant from 3 stars down to 2. The greatest sin in Veyrat’s eyes was that he was accused of serving English cheddar cheese in one of his soufflés.

TIL that photographer Carol Highsmith donated tens of thousands of her photos to the Library of Congress, making them free for public use. Getty Images later claimed copyright on many of these photos, then accused her of copyright infringement by using one of her own photos on her own site.

TIL about the remarkable life of journalist Martha Gellhorn. She reported from 100’s of war zones and was the only woman to land at Normandy on June 6, 1944 where she interviewed the wounded and dying. Her famous husband accused her of loving war more than their bed.

TIL about Giles Corey, who was accused of witchcraft during the Salem trials. He used a legal loophole and refused to plea, which meant he couldn’t be tried. He was then tortured to death, but still refused to plea, allowing his children to claim their inheritance.

TIL that during WWI, conductor Karl Muck, a German-born Swiss citizen and conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, was interned as an enemy alien for more than a year and deported. He had been falsely accused of refusing to play the National Anthem before a concert.
