TIL that Scotts Miracle-Gro Company knowingly sold poisoned bird seed for over 2 years. They sold 70+ million bags of bird seed with a pesticide toxic to birds to help with insect control during storage. Scotts paid a fine of $4 million and give an additional $500,000 donation to wildlife study.

TIL that Singapore has the longest driverless metro system in the world with it being fully automated. It currently has 199km(124mi) of automated lines with an additional 43km(27mi) planned to be completed by 2024. In second place is the Shanghai Metro with 164km(102mi) of automated lines.

TIL tarmac is short for tarmacadam which is named after John McAdam who introduced his macadamizing method in 1820. The tar- prefix comes from Edgar Hooley’s innovation to apply an additional layer of tar to macadamized pavements.

TIL birds have two lungs and two additional air sacs which allow breathing to continuously flow in a single direction through their respiratory system. This allows oxygen intake even when they exhale, which is especially needed at high flying altitudes.

TIL 52 years ago, the Dade County Sheriff’s Office issued an arrest warrant for Jim Morrison, lead singer for the Doors. Morrison thought it was a practical joke, but later learned they added an additional charge for simulated oral copulation on guitarist, Robbie Krieger, during the concert.
