TIL that Ray Liotta was not in fact Italian–he had been adopted as an infant by an Italian man and his wife, but when he met his birth mother, in his 40s, he discovered he was actually of Scottish origin.

TIL that between 1854 and 1921 in the US, over 250,000 children were transported on “Orphan Trains” to be adopted by new families; many found new homes, but, sadly, sometimes the “adoptions” were little more than auctions and the children pressed into forced farm labor.

TIL in 1955, actor Ray Liotta was adopted from an orphanage at the age of six months. He hired a private detective to locate his biological mother in the 2000s, and learned that he had one biological sister, one biological half-brother, and five biological half-sisters.

TIL Union General Philip Kearny devised the first unit insignia patches used in the U.S. Army in 1862, after mistakenly giving orders to soldiers not under his command. Afterward, his men wore a patch of red cloth to identify themselves as members of his unit. Other units quickly adopted the idea.

TIL it is widely believed the US Armed Forces never adopted the rank of Field Marshall, opting for the five-star “General of the Army” instead, because George Marshall was the first person promoted to the rank and “Marshall Marshall” sounded undignified.

TIL that the word ‘alcohol’ originates from the Arabic word Al-kohl (like the eyeliner). Ancient Egyptians made the cosmetic through a process involving heating. During the Middle Ages, the term was adopted in reference to numerous substances produced through similar means, including “alcohol”.
