TIL: Quentin Roosevelt, the youngest son of Theodore Roosevelt, was killed during WWI, in aerial combat over France, on Bastille Day in 1918. The Germans gave him a state funeral because his father was Theodore Roosevelt. Quentin is also the only child of a US President to be killed in combat.

TIL, fighter pilot Francis Gabreski was the highest scoring American flying ace in Europe with 28 aerial victories while flying the P-47 Thunderbolt, during World War II. He again became a flying ace in the Korean War, when he shot down 6 MiG-15s in aerial combat while flying the F-86 Sabre.

TIL all of Teddy Roosevelt’s sons were injured or died serving in world wars. Quentin was killed in aerial combat over France in WWI, Archibald was injured in WWI & WWII, Kermit committed suicide while serving as Army Intelligence in Alaska, and Ted died of a heart attack after invading Utah Beach.

TIL Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos (1721) were stored away untouched by the Margrave of Brandenburg lacking the necessary musicians. After rediscovery in 1849 the original manuscript was nearly lost again during a WWII aerial bombing; a librarian escaped the bombing with the concertos under his coat.
