TIL about Dr. Samuel Mudd Sr., an American physician who rendered aid to John Wilkes Booth after President Lincoln’s assassination and then covered up Booth’s location when questioned by authorities. Mudd was convicted of conspiring to assassinate the president but avoided execution by one vote.

TIL The Ottoman ironclad Mesudiye was sunk by a British submarine during the First World War but her guns were raised and installed as Dardanelles defenses. Those guns would go on to aid in sinking the French battleship Bouvet.

TIL During the Second World War the Dutch Resistance and victims of the occupation were funneled 83 million guilders (equivalent to 450 million Euros 2021) by Gijs van Hall. Hall was a Resistance member and bank official who wrote millions in fraudulent loans to aid the Dutch people.

TIL that although the British Double Cross operation captured or turned all German agents operating in Britain during WWII, the German Abwehr was equally successful in Holland with an operation called Englandspiel, capturing all British SOE agents sent to aid Dutch Resistance.

TIL Vichy Pastilles were a digestive aid turned confectionery invented in 1825. The Vichy Regime of WW2 used the sweets as propaganda and did not ration them, unlike other foodstuffs. The name of the sweets is known to make some French citizens uneasy.
