TIL that the first non-white musician to appear on MTV was Phil Chen, bassist for Rod Stewart. Chen, who was born in Jamaica and is of Chinese ancestry, was featured in “She Won’t Dance With Me,” the third video ever aired on the channel.

TIL in the first episode of Futurama (Space Pilot 3000), a man is heard going to ‘JFK Jr. Airport’. Four months after the episode aired, JFK Jr. was killed in a plane accident, and the line was dubbed over.

TIL The video for Welcome to The Jungle by Guns N’Roses was originally banned by MTV. It took the influence by David Geffen to get it aired for just one time at 4AM EST Sunday. The response was so overwhelming it shutdown MTV’s switchboard.Appetite For Destruction went on to sell 30 million copies.

TIL that nearly twenty years after The Jetsons aired, Astro the dog got his own spin-off cartoon, Astro and the Space Mutts, a part of the 1981 Saturday morning show Space Stars. Astro was still voiced by Don Messick, also the voice of Scooby-Doo, Boo-Boo, Papa Smurf, and Dr. Quest.

TIL that Byker Grove, a relatively grounded British teen drama set in a youth club which aired from 1989 to 2006, ended with all the characters becoming aware they were in a TV show with no free will of their own, fending off a T.Rex attack and ultimately being blasted into a void of nothingness.
