TIL Brazil police sniper nearly shot officer during 2014 World Cup opening. Sniper asked permission to open fire on an armed man seen approaching Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff. Permission was denied and the suspect turned out to be another policeman.

[Serious] Teacher here, if teachers are armed, what do you think their life expectancy is in the case of an active shooter situation? Both during the incident, but also once law enforcement arrives and finds them armed in an already chaotic and confusing situation?

TIL several teachers in Texas took a proficiency course that allowed them to be armed in class to defend against school shooters. Despite some of them accidentally shooting the cardboard cutout of a child 6 times in the head, they all passed the Department of Public Safety’s standards.

TIL it is widely believed the US Armed Forces never adopted the rank of Field Marshall, opting for the five-star “General of the Army” instead, because George Marshall was the first person promoted to the rank and “Marshall Marshall” sounded undignified.

TIL, US Navy Vice Admiral Joel T. Boone is the most highly decorated medical officer in the history of the US Armed Forces. During World War I, he received the Medal of Honor, Distinguished Service Cross, 6 Silver Stars and 3 Purple Hearts for heroism. He also served as physician for US Presidents.

TIL of the “Coal Wars” in the US, where from 1890-1930, many wars were fought against armed unions of workers. The Battle of Blair Mountain alone was the second largest uprising in the US (only after the Civil War), where over 1,000,000 rounds were fired.
