TIL The phrase “what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas” came from an advertising slogan created by the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority and R&R Partners in 2003. They hoped to rebrand Vegas as a place where visitors could let loose. The original phrase was “what happens here, stays here.”

TIL Jimi Hendrix joined the Army after he was caught Joyriding and given the choice between prison or service. He served in the 101st Airborne and was qualified as a Paratrooper. Due to his inability to function in an authority environment, he was given a general discharge under honorable condition.

TIL that Ruhollah Khomeini never issued a fatwa against Salman Rushdie. What was given was called a hukm, which – unlike the fatwa – remain valid even after the death of the authority who issued it.

TIL that in 1956, the Comics Code Authority tried to prevent a story from being printed because it involved a black astronaut, even though this was never actually forbidden by the Code. Fortunately, the publisher managed to get the CCA to back down by threatening to take the matter to court.

TIL The Australian Parliament can’t legally operate without a ceremonial mace, representing the monarch’s authority, being present. In 1914 a member of parliament hid the mace and it was not found for two hours, and police were called in as it was assumed to have been stolen.

TIL of Pope Celestine V, who was elected as pope against his will. Five months into his reign, he decreed that popes had the right to resign, then resigned. He was then imprisoned by his successor, who feared the former pope could undermine his authority, and died in prison two years later.
