TIL that in Australia’s worst aircraft crash no Australians died. In 1943 the crash of a USAAF B17 Flying Fortress took the lives of 40 US servicemen leaving only one survivor. No other aviation incident in Australia before or since has cost more lives.

TIL the unit of speed the knot, used extensively throughout the world in aviation, weather, and nautical contexts, comes from literal knots of the “common log” device. This 17th century device was a coil of rope with uniformly spaced knots, attached to a piece of wood shaped like a slice of pie.
