TIL that tetrodotoxin (TTX), which makes pufferfish poisonous, may not be made by the pufferfish themselves. TTX is produced by marine bacteria in the natural pufferfish food chain, and pufferfish fed TTX-free diets become non-toxic. When TTX is re-introduced to the fish, they become toxic again.

TIL that although you can buy different grades of isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol, 70% is actually most effective for disinfecting; the added water helps it to dissolve more slowly, penetrate cells, and kill bacteria.

TIL: About Volcano snails that live near deep sea vents in the Indian Ocean. Their shell is made of iron sulfide and calcium carbonate. Adults don’t need to eat because they have because they have an organ full of chemolithotrophic bacteria. They live at extreme temps and crushing pressures.

TIL Why Dog Paws Smell Like Fritos. Even the cleanest, healthiest pooch has trillions of bacteria and fungi living on their skin. That yeasty, corn chip smell is actually a normal byproduct of harmless bacteria, usually Proteus or Pseudomonas, both of which are naturally present in our environment.

TIL the Hawaiian bobtail squid feeds a symbiotic bacteria living inside of it (called Vibrio fischeri) sugar & amino acids. In exchange, the bacteria emanate just enough light to match the moon’s rays, rendering the squid virtually invisible at night

TIL about Japan Air Lines food poisoning incident. In-flight meal contaminated with a bacteria made 195 passengers and a flight attendant sick. 144 so serious they need to be hospitalized, 30 critical. JAL Catering Manager later committed suicide over the incident. He was the only fatal victim.
