TIL about the Gnomes of Wrocław. In the 1980s people in the Polish city began painting gnomes over Soviet propaganda. After the fall of the USSR, a sculptor was hired to place gnomes around the city to honor their history. Others joined in and now there are over 400 gnomes and an annual parade.

TIL The term “dive bar” came from when kitchens changed from using wood fired ovens in basements to gas or coal, and were left with empty spaces beneath the restaurant. These dingy spaces were then used as bars, and patrons began saying they were “diving down” for a drink.

TIL since 2020, white LED streetlights have been turning purple because of a defect during the manufacturing process between 2017 and 2019. The yellow phosphor coating was delaminating, and the blue LED began showing through, giving off a purplish glow.

TIL about ‘Whipping Tom’, the pseudonym for two different sexual predators, who attacked and spanked dozens of women in Stuart London. They generated so much concern that many women began to arm themselves and male vigilantes crossdressed in an attempted to apprehend them.

TIL windshield wipers were originally invented by Mary Anderson in 1903. They were originally intended to be used for trolley cars, but she could not get any companies to use them. Cadillac began using the invention on cars in 1922 but she did not profit from the invention as the patent had expired.
