TIL that Keye Luke (Number One Son, Blind Master Po from Kung Fu, and the old shopkeeper from Gremlins) was a successful artist before he was an actor. He painted murals for Grauman’s Chinese Theater, illustrated books and sheet music, and designed movie posters, including one for King Kong.

TIL In 1014, Byzantine Emperor Basil II captured several thousand Bulgarian soldiers, put them into groups of 100, and blinded 99 in every group. The last soldiers had only one eye gouged out and were ordered to lead their blind friends home. Upon seeing this, Tsar Samuel died of a heart attack.

TIL about Diving Horse attractions, where horses dove into pools of water from platforms oftentimes higher than 50 feet in the air. The Disney movie “Wild Hearts Can’t Be Broken” was based on Sonora Carver, a rider of diving horses who went blind after a horse diving accident.
