TIL Indiana Jones was inspired by Scrooge McDuck, not the other way around. George Lucas was a big fan of the comics growing up. The famous boulder sequence in Raiders of the Lost Ark was directly lifted from a 1954 issue of the McDuck comic.

TIL there’s a 7-story rock in a desert near Joshua Tree in California that 1) is maybe the largest freestanding boulder in the world, 2) once had a 24ft by 36ft apartment dug underneath it, and 3) hosted 20 years of Flying Saucer Conventions starting in the 1950s

TIL In 1999 Tiger Woods hit a tee shot that landed behind a boulder. The boulder was ruled a ‘loose impedement’ which allowed it to be moved. Several of Tiger’s gallery and his caddie worked together to move the boulder, allowing Tiger to birdie the hole.

TIL: Kummakivi is a large balancing rock in Ruokolahti, Finland. The 7-metre long boulder lies on a convex bedrock surface with a very small footprint but so firmly that it cannot be rocked with human force.

TIL that Kjeragbolten is a boulder on the mountain Kjerag in Norway. It was left in a crevasse during the last ice age, suspended above a 3,228 ft deep abyss. It is accessible without any climbing equipment, and a popular site for BASE jumping.

TIL a commercial for the Cocoa Pebbles cereal led Hulk Hogan to sue the company. The commercial had a character named Hulk Boulder fighting Flinstones characters. He claimed it damaged his reputation and used his image. Hogan and the company came to an agreement to never show the ad again.

TIL that the Shunganunga boulder, a 23-ton red quartzite rock, was moved by glaciers from the Dakotas to Kansas hundreds of thousands of years ago; the boulder is sacred to the Kanza tribe (expelled from the state named after them) and Shunganunga translates to “Big Red Rock” in their language.

TIL that the oldest known Earth rock was discovered in 2019… embedded in a boulder brought back from the moon by Apollo 14. It is the first discovered meteorite from Earth.

TIL according to legend, the Lioness of Gobedra which is engraved on a large boulder in Ethiopia, was formed when the archangel Michael hurled a lioness into the rock during battle and the impact was so great that the beast’s outline remained. It remains unknown who created it and for what purpose.
