TIL that the Capitol was designed to have George Washington’s tomb on public display. Both houses passed bills saying he should be buried there, and his wife consented, but due to various delays it took until 1830 for it to be viable. After an attempted theft of his head, the project was cancelled.

TIL in the early 18th century, the St. Bernard dog breed was used by monks living in St.Bernard’s Pass to help rescue people after snowstorms. Their resistance to cold weather and great sense of direction made them helpful for this. They were even able to find people deeply buried under snow.

TIL Arthur Wharton, born Ghana, 1865, became the 100 yard world record holder for 30 years, the world’s first professional black soccer player, a cycling champion, a professional cricketer and then a professional rugby player. He died penniless in 1930 and was buried in an unmarked paupers grave.

TIL 94 US WWII Servicemen executed by the US Military are buried in “Plot E” of the Oise Aisne American Cemetery in France, a section designated for “the dishonored dead”. Hedges hide it from view, no US flag is permitted to fly over it, the graves lack headstones and it is not publicly accessible.

TIL of Mt. Zion Cemetery, founded in 1916 in East Los Angeles, as a burial place for Eastern European Jews. Amongst the buried was Lamed Shapiro, noted Yiddish writer who died destitute. Inconclusive county records indicate no legal owner, with the last burial taking place in the late 2000s.
