TIL that the Royal Navy had a ship named for farts. HMS Petard was named after a small bomb that the French called a “petard”, meaning “fart”. A fan of puns, Shakespeare almost certainly knew of the word’s origin when he wrote the phrase “hoist with his own petard” i.e. “lifted by his own fart.”

TIL The familiar story that Isaac Newton was inspired to research the nature of gravity by an apple hitting his head is almost certainly apocryphal. All Newton himself ever said was that the idea came to him as he sat “in a contemplative mood” and “was occasioned by the fall of an apple”.
