TIL The former Confederate President Jefferson Davis met a crowd of 7,000 cheering people when he came to Montreal, Canada. Montreal had been a safe haven for Confederates during the Civil War and some Canadians had supported the Confederacy out of fear the Union might invade Canada.

TIL Michael Shaara’s book The Killer Angels, 1975 Pulitzer Prize for fiction, and the basis for the 1993 movie Gettysburg, reached the top of the NYT best seller list twenty years after being published. The Civil War battle novel is considered one of the best historic fictions ever written.

TIL that Abraham Lincoln and Karl Marx corresponded during the Civil War. Marx and the International Working Man’s Association in London congratulated Lincoln on his reelection and declared “the triumphant war cry of your re-election is Death to Slavery”.
