TIL The largest US industrial spill was in Kingston TN. 2008 with 5.4 million cubic yards of coal ash equivalent of 1.1 billion US gallons was released into the surrounding environment.

TIL that most of the world’s electricity is generated by steam. Oil, coal, and even nuclear plants all produce power by heating water to produce steam. The steam is then driven through a turbine, which in turn spins a generator and generates electricity.

TIL that 98% of electricity generation whether nuclear, coal, hydro, or wind – are all just different methods of spinning electromagnets. Solar is the only industrial- scale method that doesn’t use turbines of some kind.

TIL Pale Ale exists because the fuel source for brewing beer changed. Peat and coal were used to roast malt, imparting a dark color and smoky flavor to beers. But when coke fuel, a cleaner-burning fuel derived from coal, was introduced, the color and smoky flavor were not present, they had pale ale.

TIL of the “Coal Wars” in the US, where from 1890-1930, many wars were fought against armed unions of workers. The Battle of Blair Mountain alone was the second largest uprising in the US (only after the Civil War), where over 1,000,000 rounds were fired.

TIL Play-doh was originally sold as a wallpaper cleaner. The company nearly went under after WW2 due to the transition away from coal heating and the introduction of washable vinyl wallpaper.
