TIL the word Dollar is the Anglicized version of the German word Thaler, meaning from the valley. Thaler is the shortened version of Joachimthalers, a mine town in the Czech Republic (formerly Bohemia) where silver coins were minted.

TIL of LaVere Redfield, an American multimillionaire who was discovered to be hoarding a massive collection of around 270k silver Morgan dollars and postage stamps in his basement during a robbery in 1952. Following his death in 1974, his heirs uncovered even more coins hidden, around 7.3 million.

TIL Previous to the Euro there was the Latin Monetary Union in which many European countries would mint coins to the same LMU standards allowing for ease of exchange. The LMU was established in 1865 and disbanded in 1927. The standards fell out of favor due to currency debasement and WW1.

TIL the graphic design of Swiss 2 franc coin has not been updated for 148 years. Other than datestamp, the 2022 coins look identical to 1874 coins.
