TIL about medieval “Divorce by combat”. The man was placed in a waist-height 3-foot deep hole, with one hand tied behind his back while the woman was allowed to move freely, to try and make the fight as fair as possible. Both parties wore a unitard.

TIL: In China for about three years around 1900, a secret martial arts training club tried to overthrow the Chinese government & force out foreigners. Known to the West as “The Boxer Rebellion,” the name literally comes from the fact that members fought unarmed using Chinese forms of unarmed combat.

TIL during World War II, Papua New Guinean ‘Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels’ carried 750 wounded up/down the Kokoda Trail. They prioritized feeding patients & built shelter with 4 sleeping on each side at night. No known injured soldier was ever abandoned by the Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels, even during heavy combat.

TIL the Battle of Castle Itter, fought on May 5, 1945 near the end of WWII, saw the Americans and Germans join forces to combat the SS attacking the Itter Castle in Austria, known to have housed a number of high-profile French prisoners.

TIL: The first helicopter used by the US in combat was during WWII, originally meant to ferry parts from ships to shore, they quickly realized how useful they were and used them for medevac purposes.

TIL US Army Maj. Gen. William Dean, captured by N. Kor. troops in 1950, was the most superior US officer captured since the fall of the Philippines. Before his capture, he led troops in brutal urban combat, knocked out a tank with a hand grenade, and survived over a month in the wild, losing 80 lbs.

TIL actor Clark Gable flew combat missions with the US Army during WWII. During one mission, a shell ripped through the heel of his shoe and missed his head by 30 cm. A year later, his discharge papers were signed by then-Captain Ronald Reagan.
