TIL the ‘Overwhelmingly Large Telescope’ was a conceptual European observatory that was intended to have a single aperture of 100 meters in diameter, but due to the complexity and cost of a telescope of this size, they decided to build the 39-meter diameter ‘Extremely Large Telescope’ instead.
