TIL the “snake oil salesman” is attributed to Clark Stanley who gained national attention marketing snake oil at the 1893 World’s Fair. In 1916 a USDA analysis concluded there was no snake oil in his concoction at all, and that it was 99% mineral oil. He was fined $20 ($543.69 in 2022).

TiL that upon finishing the sci fi film “Devil Girls From Mars”, a then 12 year old Octavia Butler concluded that she could write a better story. Butler went on to win multiple Hugo and Nebula awards and became the first sci-fi writer to receive a MacArthur Fellowship.

TIL that when naturalist Robert Plot discovered the first dinosaur fossils in 1677, he believed they belonged to giant humans that roamed the earth years ago. It wasn’t until 1824 when Oxford professor William Buckland concluded that the fossils belonged to an extinct lizard, the “Megalosaurus.”

TIL 18th century painter Theodoor Wilkens was sketching the ruins of an town in Rome with a crowd watching him. The crowd’s movement on the edge of the town caused a building to collapse. The crowd concluded that he was practicing witchcraft and he had to storm out of the city.

TIL that in 2013, police in Sayre, OK were testing new sonar equipment in Foss Lake. They found two submerged cars containing 3 bodies each that had been missing since 1969 & 1970. Police later concluded all were accidental drownings w/ no foul play.

TIL of the Morgenthau Plan, a post-WWII proposal for Germany by US Treasury Secretary Henry Morgenthau Jr. in which its arms and other industries would be destroyed, and the country would be partitioned. It was concluded to be unworkable and would result in 25 million Germans starving to death.

TIL: In 1958 Great Lakes freighter Carl D. Bradley sank with the loss of 33 lives. Over the objections of witnesses who survived the sinking, the Coast Guard concluded the ship did not break in two, shielding its owners from liability. In 1997 the shipwreck was discovered in 2 sections 90 feet apart
