TIL of Dick Bong, the USA’s top flying ace during WW2 with over 40 air-to-air victories. Bong believed his gunnery accuracy was poor and compensated by flying close to his targets and flying through the debris of exploding enemy aircraft. He died conducting a test flight shortly after the war ended.

TIL that Jean-Baptiste Lully, composer at the court of Versailles, died of gangrene after hitting his foot with his long conducting staff. He was conducting a Te Deum in celebration that Louis XIV recovered from a surgery on his anal exit. Lully refused an amputation so he could still dance.

TIL Georg Wilhelm Richmann was the first person in history to have died while conducting electrical experiments. He was attending a meeting when he heard thunder, so he ran home to capture the event. A lightning ball appeared and collided with him, blew his shoes open and killed him.

TIL that the Marshall Islands are still waiting for $2 billion compensation from the US for conducting nuclear tests there in 1946 which had large fallout. Many of the islanders and their descendants still live in exile, as the islands remain contaminated with high levels of radiation.

TIL about Janet Parker, the last person on record to die of smallpox. In 1978, Parker worked above a U.K. research laboratory conducting experiments with the pathogen. Today smallpox is officially held at only two places in the world, the CDC in the U.S. and the Vector Institute in Russia.
