TIL that Hawaii was a sovereign self-governing kingdom all the way up until 1893, totally unassociated with the U.S., until a coup d’état that year by 13 businessmen and 162 U.S. troops, with the openly stated goal of annexing the islands. (They succeeded.)

TIL that in 1889, the Brazilian military, alongside slave-owning elites, organized a coup to overthrow emperor Pedro II for abolishing slavery. In response, a group of freed slaves organized themselves into a militia known as the Black Guard in order to guarantee the safety of the Imperial Family.

TIl that during a coup attempt against him in 1972 which involved the attempted shoot down of his plane, King Hassan II of Morocco reportedly duped the rebels by personally grabbing a radio and telling them to “Stop Firing! The Tyrant is Dead!” The rebels bought it and the coup failed

TIL The night before Emperor Hirohito’s surrender broadcast army officers launched a coup. The officers occupied the Imperial Palace trying to destroy the Emporer’s surrender record and assassinate officials. The plan failed when the record was smuggled out and the military didn’t support the coup.

TIL about Yukio Mishima, author and right wing activist who after joining the the SDF at 45 tried to spark a coup aimed at restoring the emperor and shogunate, barricaded in an office of a high rank officer committed seppuku. His second failed 3x to sever his head, another friend needed to step in.
