TIL that in WW2, a Marine Corps Corsair pilot used his propeller to chew off the tail of an enemy aircraft after his guns jammed, while under fire from the enemy plane’s tailgunner. The enemy plane crashed but the Corsair pilot made it back to base, receiving the Navy Cross for his actions.

TIL the East Palestine crash isn’t the first time Norfolk Southern has had a major hazmat train derailment. In 2005, a Norfolk Southern train crashed into a textile mill, releasing 60 tons of chlorine gas, putting 4,000 people out of work, and costing $215 million to settle.

TIL of the 1955 Le Mans disaster. French driver Pierre Levegh crashed into a crowd of spectators. The crash, explosion and subsequent fire killed 84 and injured more than 120. It is still the deadliest car race crash ever.

TIL of Operation Babylift, a US-led evacuation of children from Vietnam during the Vietnam War for adoption in America, Canada, Australia, and Europe. The very first flight crashed shortly after takeoff and killed 78 children.

TIL that an F-117 Nighthawk crashed in Sequoia National Forest in 1986, two years before the plane was publicly announced. The US Air Force established a permitter around the crash site and secretly replaced the wreckage with a wrecked F-101A that had been stored in Area 51 for this purpose.

TIL of J.W.H.T. Douglas, an English cricket player from the early 1900s, who drowned when the ship he was sailing on crashed into another. The captains of the ships were brothers, and were attempting to wish each other a Merry Christmas in passing when one rammed the other in heavy fog.
