TIL That red, irritated eyes after an swimming in a pool isn’t just from the chlorine. The reason for eye redness and irritation actually comes from the combination of chlorine AND pee. This combination creates Trichloramine, which is toxic and explosive.

TIL of East Asian age reckoning. An age counting system common in China Korea Japan and Vietnam. People are considered to be one the day they are born and on New Years Day a year is added. This creates the scenario where children born on December 31 become two-year-olds the very next day.

TIL about a Chinese cooking method called ‘Velveting’, which is a cornstarch and egg mixture that you soak meats in for a few hours prior to cooking. This provides more thermal mass which cooks the meat slower and creates a moisture barrier that seals in the juices for exceptionally tender meat.

TIL dripping molten glass into water creates a teardrop with a tail called Prince Rupert’s drop, for the Rhine prince who brought them to England in ~1660. They can withstand hammer blows on the bulbous end, but turn to powder if the tail is damaged. These drops were an early form of tempered glass.
