TIL of Marie-Antoine Carême, a french chef who is widely considered as the founder of haute cuisine and one of the first internationally renowned celebrity chefs. Carême died at the age of 48, due perhaps to many years inhaling the toxic fumes of the coal burning stoves over which he cooked.

TIL – In 2010, French cuisine earned a spot on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. The “gastronomic meal of the French” is alongside other embodiments of “intangible” cultural heritage, including Peking opera and Corsican polyphonic chant, on UNESCO’s list celebrating world art forms and traditions.

TIL that Greek Yogurt is not a distinct part of Greek cuisine, but rather an adopted term that emerged in the UK in the 1980’s after strained yogurt was imported under the name “Total” by a Greek company. Since then, Greek yogurt has referred to strained yogurt in English speaking countries.

The Incas made a freeze-dried potato food called chuño and Japanese Ainu cuisine also uses ground and dried potatoes.
