TIL a failed marketing gimmick by Marlboro killed and injured multiple people in Poland. Sales reps. would distribute free cigarettes and light them with easy-lit matchsticks. The matchsticks were lit by pretty much anything they touched and caused a deadly car fire on one occasion.

TIL General Motors uses byproducts from their cars to create artificial stalactites for bats. These artificial caves help prevent the spread of white-nose syndrome (a deadly fungus) by reducing overcrowding & giving the bats more space.

TIL the North American Gray Squirrel is considered an invasive species in Britain as the squirrels carry a squirrel pox that is deadly for the Red Squirrels native to Britain. The Gray Squirrel also eats seven times as much food as the Red Squirrels, crowding out any who survive the squirrel pox.

TIL rhesus macaque monkeys from Asia were released in Florida’s Silver Springs park 100 years ago. Today there are thriving colonies across Florida, many carrying Herpes B (which is harmless to monkeys but deadly to humans). 50 people have been infected with Herpes B and 21 have died since 1932.
