TIL That Smedley Butler was one of the most decorated Marines with 2 Medals of Honor. He served 33 years & became an anti war advocate. He wrote “War is a Racket” about war profiteering. He said “the best he[Al Capone] could do was to operate his racket in 3 districts. I operated on 3 continents.”

TIL, US Navy Vice Admiral Joel T. Boone is the most highly decorated medical officer in the history of the US Armed Forces. During World War I, he received the Medal of Honor, Distinguished Service Cross, 6 Silver Stars and 3 Purple Hearts for heroism. He also served as physician for US Presidents.

TIL Ancient Greeks had gender reveal parties. Of course they didn’t have ultrasound, but they had a ceremony called The Amphidromia where a household would present their newborn to family and community. The house was decorated outside with olive branches for a boy or with garland of wool for a girl.

TIL Catacomb saints are skeletons exhumed from Roman catacombs and decorated with gold and jewels to serve as “replacement relics” for those destroyed during the Protestant Reformation. It is unlikely that any of those skeletons are actually of the people they are reputed by tradition to be.

TIL of Tommy Prince, an Indigenous Canadian War Hero & one of Canada’s most decorated First Nations Soldiers, serving in World War II & the Korean War. Prince was a part of the first Canadian regiment to arrive in the Korean War Zone.

TIL over 80,000 trees were plantedon Sable Island in an effort to stabilize it. Only one tree survived, and despite being over 50 years old, is only a few feet tall. It is decorated yearly as a Christmas tree in December as part of a tradition among the station staff.

TIL about “The Miracle Ship” in World War 2. Weeks after surviving Pearl Harbor, a Japanese torpedo blew it’s bow off. Presumed dead by the US, the few survivors built a bow out of bamboo. Never designed to fight, it won 60 battle stars and was the 4th most decorated battle ship in US History.

TIL The Santa Maria Nuova hospital in Florence, still in operation today, was founded in 1288 by the father of Beatrice(one of the main characters in Dante’s devine comedy). The hospital is decorated with frescoes by renaissance masters and Leonardo studied anatomy at the same institution

TIL that even though water polo has never involved real horses, the sport started with the players sitting on barrels and swinging mallets. The barrels were decorated to look like horses.

TIL there’s a room at Pixar dubbed “the Love Lounge.” It’s decorated with Christmas lights, shag carpets, lava lamps, and a stocked bar. Steve Jobs wasn’t a drinker so he nicknamed it The Meditation Room, saying it reminded him of his dorm room at Reed College, but without the acid.
