TIL, US Navy Vice Admiral Joel T. Boone is the most highly decorated medical officer in the history of the US Armed Forces. During World War I, he received the Medal of Honor, Distinguished Service Cross, 6 Silver Stars and 3 Purple Hearts for heroism. He also served as physician for US Presidents.

TIL Ancient Greeks had gender reveal parties. Of course they didn’t have ultrasound, but they had a ceremony called The Amphidromia where a household would present their newborn to family and community. The house was decorated outside with olive branches for a boy or with garland of wool for a girl.

TIL Catacomb saints are skeletons exhumed from Roman catacombs and decorated with gold and jewels to serve as “replacement relics” for those destroyed during the Protestant Reformation. It is unlikely that any of those skeletons are actually of the people they are reputed by tradition to be.

TIL about “The Miracle Ship” in World War 2. Weeks after surviving Pearl Harbor, a Japanese torpedo blew it’s bow off. Presumed dead by the US, the few survivors built a bow out of bamboo. Never designed to fight, it won 60 battle stars and was the 4th most decorated battle ship in US History.

TIL The Santa Maria Nuova hospital in Florence, still in operation today, was founded in 1288 by the father of Beatrice(one of the main characters in Dante’s devine comedy). The hospital is decorated with frescoes by renaissance masters and Leonardo studied anatomy at the same institution
