TIL that after the Goliad Campaign in which Mexican forces defeated the Texian Army, an order came down to massacre the Texans. Mexican General José de Urrea who was responsible for defeating the Texans, was strongly opposed to the massacre but was ignored.

TIL that the bearskin headdress worn by the Royal Guard was first worn by the French Imperial Guard, Napoleon’s elite troops. After defeating Napoleon at Waterloo, the British 1st Regiment had their uniforms redesigned to incorporate the bearskin headdress to honor their victory.

TIL filming the duel between Inigo Montoya & The Six-Fingered Man was special for Mandy Patinkin, who had also lost his father — to cancer. So defeating the villain “meant I killed the cancer that killed my dad.” This brought extra weight to the line “I want my father back, you son of a bitch.”

TIL about eunus. A Roman slave from Syria who claimed to be a prophet of the goddess atargatis and led the slaves in revolt during the first servile war. He proclaimed himself king, took over several cities around Sicily and succeeded in defeating the Roman’s for several years before being defeated.

TIL about gypsy boxer Johann Trollmann, he was threatened by the Nazis to throw his next match, and he came with his hair dyed blonde and with whiteface, the caricature of an Aryan. He was later sent to a concetration camp and killed after defeating a camp functionary in a match.
