TIL AT&T created the American area code system in 1947. Because lower numbers had less travel and were quicker to dial, larger cities were given lower area codes (excluding 0). The top 5 cities: New York 212, Chicago 312, Philadelphia 215, Los Angeles 213, and Detroit 313.

TIL that Frank Goldsmith, a survivor of the RMS Titanic disaster, ended up living near a baseball stadium in Detroit. He hated game days, because the sound of the cheering crowd reminded him of the screaming people in the water during the sinking.

TIL in 2006, Detroit Tigers pitcher Joel Zumaya missed part of the American League Championship Series due to injuring his arm playing Guitar Hero. Later releases of the game had a disclaimer that read, “No pitchers were harmed in the making of this game. Except for one. He had it coming.”

TIL about the legend of Nain Rouge, in Detroit, Michigan. The “Demon of the Strait” is said to be a warning of disaster to come and has become a part of Contemporary Detroit culture with the Marche du Nain Rouge festival every spring.
