TIL that in WW2, a Marine Corps Corsair pilot used his propeller to chew off the tail of an enemy aircraft after his guns jammed, while under fire from the enemy plane’s tailgunner. The enemy plane crashed but the Corsair pilot made it back to base, receiving the Navy Cross for his actions.

TIL that during the War of 1812, Britain sent out a fake letter in Detroit that claimed they had 5,000 Native American warriors (they had about a tenth of that) and ensured their US enemy obtained this memo. It led to the US surrendering in Detroit, without a single British death.

TIL that Bing and other “paradogs” were trained to drop with parachutes behind enemy lines in WW2. Bing earned a medal for Gallantry for excellent patrol work while serving with the 13th Btn. Airborne Division in Normandy, June 1944.

TIL that the last war chief of the Crow Nation earned his title in Europe during WW2. He completed all four tasks required to become a war chief: touching an enemy without killing him, taking an enemy’s weapon, leading a successful war party, and stealing an enemy’s horse.

TIL The Mitchell Monument marks the only place on US soil where deaths occurred as a result of enemy (Japanese) action during World War II. Or was it? The deaths at this site were kept secret for years because the US didn’t want the Japanese to know that the balloon bombs were successful.
