TIL Chaebols are a large industrial conglomerate run and controlled by an individual or family in South Korea. A chaebol is controlled by a person or group whose power over the group often exceeds legal authority. The term first appeared in English text in 1972. Hyundai is an example.

TIL about “Bonin English” — a dialect that is an English/Japanese fusion, spoken on the Ogasawara Islands. Previously uninhabited, the islands’ first modern inhabitants were anglophones in the 19th century. The islands went back and forth between the UK, US, and Japan. Today, they are part of Japan.
