TIL about the Sumela Monastery. Built nearly 4,000 feet up the side of a cliff, it was founded in the 300s. Destroyed and rebuilt several times, mostly during the Byzantine Era, it was emptied and abandoned in the 1920s. Taken over by the Turkish government it has been restored for tourism.

Today I learned about Marion Stokes, a Philadelphia woman who began taping whatever was on television in 1979 and didn’t stop until her death in 2012. The 71,000 VHS and Betamax tapes she made are the most complete collection preserving this era of TV. The Marion Stokes Project

TIL about the Haber–Bosch process which allows for the creation of ammonia easily. Which is one of the key factors in the massively increased agriculture ability of the modern era as the ammonia is often used in fertiliser.

TIL Thomas Wise was a keen collector of first editions in original condition dating back to Elizabethan era and given an honorary M.A. by University of Oxford. He parlayed his reputation as a collector of books into a career in creating and selling forgeries of nearly 300 works of English authors.

TIL about the Degenerate Era, where the stars in our universe will run out of fuel, and the starry night sky we see today will no longer exist. Aging stars and stellar remnants will be too cold to support life. It’s hypothesized to happen about 1 quintillion years after the Big Bang.

TIL of the Dew Drop Inn. It was a former New Orleans nightclub known for catering to Black audiences during the segregation era. Singers such as Ray Charles, James Brown, and Earl King once performed there. The club allowed white patrons and thus was sometimes raided for violating Jim Crow laws.
