TIL that, on 16 November, 1949, students in Ghent (Belgium) stormed the medieval castle, lowered the portcullis and threw fruit from the walls at the police to protest a new tax on beer. The event is still commemorated yearly by the city as the greatest student prank in its history.

TIL of the Aswan scorpion invasion. In 2001, a rare rainfall event in Aswan led to the scorpions evacuating their homes and coming into contact with people. Over 500 people were stung.

TIL of the Mad Gasser of Mattoon – an individual dressed in black that was believed to be responsible for gas attacks in Mattoon, Illinois during the 1940s. Despite claims and eye witnesses many have written it off as a mass hysteria event or one caused by the inhalation of pollutants/substances.

TIL that blue-green algae is not scientifically an algae, but instead a gram-negative bacteria. They are capable of oxygenic photosynthesis and have fossil records dating back 3.5 billion years. Furthermore, they are the first organisms known to have produced oxygen during the Great Oxidation Event.
