TIL that Nazi Field Marshal Ferdinand Schörner was especially harsh on deserters, even putting out an order in 1945 that all soldiers found deserting were to be court-martialled and immediately hung, and that later that year he deserted his own post.

TIL Thomas(ine) Hall was declared both a man and a woman in a Virginia court in 1629 and ordered to wear men’s clothing with a woman’s apron and bonnet. He/She would present as either gender carnally and when working as soldier, lacemaker, field laborer, or maid. Thomasine was physically intersex.

TIL of Fort Stevens, Oregon, the only military installation in the mainland US to be attacked during World War 2. A Japanese submarine surfaced off the coast and fired a volley of shells at the fort, which took no damage aside from the backstop of its baseball field.

TIL That early model M-16s were so prone to jams and malfunctions, mostly due to the failure to ship them with cleaning kits and ammunition which fouled the operating mechanism, that the US military produced a comic book detailing proper field stripping instructions for the weapon.
